The Scholarship
There will be one Wannon Water Engineering Scholarship awarded on an annual basis to a student completing year 12 and applying to study Civil Engineering at a Victorian University.
The aim of the scholarship is to:
- Support a full time student from the Wannon Water service delivery area in south west Victoria; and
- Promote the water industry to tertiary level students
The scholarship will be awarded for a four year period and consists of: 1. Christmas vacation employment with Wannon Water as a Civil Engineering Cadet at the end of the second and third years of study; and
2. An annual cash amount of $5,000 for educational expenses as defined in the Wannon Water Scholarship Agreement and a minimum of two (2) years post graduate employment.

Eligibility
To be eligible for the scholarship, applicants must comply with all of the following requirements:
- Parent/Guardian and/or student must reside within the Wannon Water service delivery area
- Be enrolled as a full time student in a tertiary level engineering course. Preference is given to students planning to study Civil Engineering
- A TER score of 75 or above

Selection of Applicants
All applications will be considered by a committee appointed by Wannon Water. The committee may consist of the following:
- General Manager – Assets
- General Manager – Service Delivery
- Branch Manager – Human Resources
Short listed applicants will be required to undertake an interview. All interviews will be held in Warrnambool at a mutually agreed time.
Applicants will be assessed on a number of criteria. Whilst academic achievement will be considered, it will not be the only basis of assessment. Criteria to be assessed will include, but is not limited to:
- Desire to work in the water industry (as per written submission)
- Awareness of the water industry and current issues
- Academic record
- Previous community involvement; and
- Other criteria set by the selection committee
The committee shall also review the performance and progress of scholarship holders, including providing the student feedback. The review shall take place in January each year.

Conditions of the Scholarship
The following conditions apply to the Scholarship:
- The student has a desire to be employed within the water industry after graduation
- The student continues to obtain satisfactory grades in all subjects studied. Students are required to submit copies of their results for their second and third years of study to Wannon Water for review
- Students stay enrolled in the same course after being awarded the scholarship
- Continue to study on a full time basis apart from vacation periods
- Submit a copy of their 4th year results at the end of each semester including verification that they have met the requirements of a degree in Civil Engineering
- Takes up paid work experience at the end of 2nd and 3rd years for the period of the semester break
- Agrees to two (2) years post graduate employment with Wannon Water
- Agrees to the terms and conditions as set out in the Wannon Water Scholarship Agreement (to be issued to the successful candidate).
Failure to comply with the above will be grounds for cancelation of the scholarship and recovering monies paid to date.

Employment
After Graduation Wannon Water will offer the successful student a full-time engineering position within the Corporation after Graduation. It is desirable for the student to achieve a Distinction average for their academic performance in the 4th year.
The position will primarily be working within one of the Technical Services departments located in Warrnambool, but may also include periods of time working at other locations within the Corporation’s service region.
Vacation employment Vacation employment will be made available from the beginning of December to the end of February (approximately 12 weeks) each year until the completion of studies.
The salary offered will be in accordance with Engineers Australia Guidelines and consist of the following: Student who has completed 2nd year of study 65% of Graduate Engineer Salary Student who has completed 3rd year of study 75% of Graduate Engineer Salary
Current Graduate Engineers salaries for 2009 are in the order of $47,910 per annum.

Applying
Applicants will need to supply the following as part of their application:
- Personal details including full name, address and date of birth
- Details of the year twelve subjects and results achieved. Copies of academic records will be required
- Parental home address and name of Secondary School where Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE) or equivalent was undertaken
- A written essay (maximum 1,000 words) or PowerPoint presentation outlining why you are interested in Civil Engineering
- Provision of two referees – one academic and one employer or personal (not a relative).
