Wannon Water confirms Penshurst water supply safe for drinking

03 August 2015

Wannon Water has confirmed that the treated water supply in Penshurst is free of contamination and is safe to drink.

The confirmation follows the announcement last Thursday regarding groundwater contamination at the CFA Penshurst Training Campus.

Wannon Water Managing Director Andrew Jeffers said a thorough and comprehensive series of tests on water samples taken last Thursday has confirmed that the Penshurst urban water supply is free of contamination.

“Wannon Water’s primary concern is the wellbeing of its customers in Penshurst who use the urban water supply, which is why we put the highest priority on this additional set of tests and provided free bottled water while the tests were undertaken,” Mr Jeffers said.

“I am pleased to confirm categorically that there is no contamination of the Penshurst urban water supply and our customers can be confident that the water remains safe to drink.

“Until the extent of contamination around the CFA Training Campus in Penshurst is clearer, Wannon Water will implement a more extensive water sampling program so that we can guarantee the safety of the water supply on an ongoing basis.”

Wannon Water will conduct a second letter drop throughout the town on Tuesday to confirm the safety of the drinking water supply with all Penshurst customers directly.

Mr Jeffers also took the opportunity to thank the Penshurst community for their cooperation and understanding while the water sample tests were conducted.

“The response from the Penshurst community since Thursday has been terrific and I’d like to extend my thanks and appreciation for the way they have worked with us in the last few days,” Mr Jeffers said.

“In particular, I’d like to thank Michael and Marcia Cameron at the Penshurst Newsagency and Takeaway for providing a prominent central location for customers to obtain free bottled water and further information while the tests were undertaken.”
