New lease of life for Port Fairy water tower

23 March 2015

Port Fairy’s main drinking water storage is getting an important makeover, both inside and out.

Wannon Water is refurbishing the water tower on the Princes Highway in Port Fairy’s west so it can continue to provide reliable, secure services for the community for decades to come.

Managing Director Grant Green said refurbishing the water tower is consistent with Wannon Water’s proactive approach to asset maintenance and will reduce the risk of water supply interruptions in the future.

“The water tower was built in 1975 and, due to its age, requires a routine refurbishment to protect the supply of drinking water for our customers in Port Fairy,” Mr Green said.

“Once complete, the refurbishment will ensure the Port Fairy water tower is in tip-top condition to service the local community for the next 40-50 years.”

The refurbishment involves recoating the tower’s internal and external walls to protect the underlying steel from corrosion, as well as other minor external maintenance.

Recoating the tower’s external walls has already commenced, with the works to concentrate on the internal walls from mid-April.

The works have been scheduled to take advantage of a low water demand period and are not expected to cause any interruption to customers’ water supplies. No traffic restrictions will be required throughout the project.

The entire refurbishment project is expected to be completed by July 2015, weather permitting.
