$2 million project to cater for Warrnambool's growth

Wannon Water is constructing a new sewer pipeline in South Warrnambool to cater for the city’s future growth.

The $2 million project will begin next month and is expected to be completed by mid-2017.

Branch Manager Asset Creation Simon Perrin said the new trunk sewer would duplicate the existing line that transfers most of Warrnambool’s sewage to the Water Reclamation Plant for treatment.

“This project is part of Wannon Water’s ongoing commitment to reliable service delivery and is an important proactive measure that will ensure the Warrnambool sewerage system can meet the city’s needs for the next 30 years and beyond,” Mr Perrin said.

The contract for the project has been awarded to Warrnambool-based company Rodger Constructions.

Work will mainly take place within the nature strips along Harris Street and McGennan Street and within the sealed road surfaces along Coramba Court and Elliot Street. The trench for the 750 millimetre diameter pipe will be up to 5.5 metres deep in places.

Mr Perrin said when the project was in its planning stages, Wannon Water investigated all options for retaining the existing vegetation along the route of the sewer line.

“However, some vegetation along Harris Street, north of the Merri River bridge, will need to be removed to allow for construction work to take place.

“Wannon Water will be partnering with the local Landcare group and Warrnambool City Council to ensure that appropriate revegetation occurs once the project is complete,” Mr Perrin said.

Elliot Street and Coramba Court are expected to be closed to through-traffic when construction takes place in each area.

Mr Perrin said the contractor would be working closely with local residents to ensure they could still access their properties throughout the construction.

“Access to the rail trail will be maintained throughout the construction period but a detour route along Harris Street will be in place when the works cross the rail trail.”
