A Koroit student has topped the state in the 2020 National Water Week poster competition.

Indiana Cuomo from St Patrick’s Primary School, won the year 1/2 section with her colourful poster illustrating this year’s theme “reimagining our water future”. Indiana’s poster encouraged everyone to plant trees and keep waterways clean, collect and use rainwater for flushing toilets, in washing machines and gardens, and have shorter showers of three minutes or less.

The poster was judged at local level by representatives from Wannon Water, Southern Rural Water and the Glenelg Hopkins Catchment Management Authority before being selected as the Victorian winner.

Indiana was awarded $100 for winning the Wannon Water contest and a further $150 for taking out the state prize. St Patrick’s school also benefitted, receiving $300 for having a Victorian winner.

More than 150 entries from 18 schools across the south-west were submitted as part of the local competition.

Wannon Water’s education and engagement advisor Catherine Grist said this year’s theme highlighted the need for people to understand how important water is for life.

“We’re lucky to live in a region with a diverse range of water supplies that have proven to be reliable and secure, even during extended periods of drought, but that doesn’t mean we should take water for granted,” Mrs Grist said.

“Access to clean water is so important to our daily lives, and it is down to all of us to protect our water environments and resources.

“National Water Week is a great way of reinforcing the importance of using water wisely. It’s a focus of our education program and our work with kindergartens, schools and community groups.

Other prizes in the local competition were awarded to students at Merrivale Primary School, St Patrick’s Primary School in Camperdown, Coleraine Primary School, Gray Street Primary School in Hamilton, Hamilton North Primary School and the Merri River School.
