Help shape our region’s water plan

The Department of Energy, Environment and Climate Action (DEECA) is developing a new Western Region Sustainable Water Strategy in response to the ongoing dry conditions affecting much of western Victoria.

Sustainable Water Strategies provide an important opportunity for our community to help shape plans to secure our water supplies, improve efficient water use, and protect our waterways and water values into the future.

What area does it cover?

The strategy focuses on western Victoria — from the south‑west coast across the Wimmera and into the southern Mallee. This includes a mix of agricultural and urban communities in towns such as Ballarat, Colac, Warrnambool, Portland, Port Campbell, Hamilton, Ouyen, Horsham, Avoca, Stawell, Ararat and Edenhope.

Community input is important

Local insight is essential. Community feedback will provide an understanding of concerns, opportunities, and water values in the western region.

That’s why DEECA are inviting expressions of interest from people who have knowledge or experience in water supply and water quality to join working groups to guide the development of the strategy.

What’s the commitment?

Working groups will meet around 4 to 6 times between now and the end of 2027. Meetings will be hybrid, so members can take part either in person or online.

Expressions of interest close 16 March 2026
