The East Warrnambool Water Tower will be lit up with a temporary lighting installation during celebrations for the longest night of the year, the winter solstice.

Wannon Water Managing Director Andrew Jeffers encouraged the community to check out the display. “We’re inviting people to join us as we switch on the lights on Saturday 21 June from 5:30 to 9pm”, The installation will be visible from near and far, but can be seen up close at Tower Square in Selby Road during the event.

The installation reflects Wannon Water’s commitment to go beyond water for stronger communities. To support this goal, the water corporation has developed a Recreation Opportunities Strategy, providing a guide to expand community access to assets and increase recreational benefits for local residents and visitors.

“We already have several assets that support public art, like murals, throughout the region,” Mr Jeffers said. “These artworks enhance the character of their locations and offer opportunities for cultural, environmental, and corporate education. Local communities value these assets as they foster a sense of identity, belonging, and connection.”

Wannon Water has been exploring options for more public art installations, with the East Warrnambool Water Tower highlighted as an ideal location for a trial using the temporary lighting.

Mr Jeffers said the trial would help Wannon Water get a better understanding of how the lighting would look and work. “It will also provide an opportunity for the community to let us know what they think about the project and share their ideas.”

He encouraged interested people to visit engage.wannonwater.com.au/enlighten-us and share their thoughts on the project.
