About the event

Join an exciting tour of the Water Treatment Plant in Portland to celebrate National Science Week. This is a unique opportunity to see the plant at Bald Hill.

When: Thursday 20 August 2026

Time: 10:30am, 12:30pm (each tour lasts one hour)

Where: This tour departs from and returns to 15 Townsend Street Portland, VIC 3305

We’re inviting you to join this fantastic tour of the Portland (Bald Hill) Water Treatment Plant.

Not everyone loves the taste of Portland’s drinking water, but do you know why it tastes the way it does?

Get a behind-the-scenes look at how water is brought up from the Dilwyn aquifer, cooled and made safe for consumption.

Bring your family, friends and colleagues along for a fascinating session of learning and exploration. This tour has science. It has engineering, technology, geology. And, it has incredible views!

Getting there

This tour is by bus only. The bus will depart from and return to our 15 Townsend St Portland office. There is ample on-street parking.

Important information

Tours will take place approx one hour for groups of up to 18 people. Minimum age is 5 years and children must be accompanied by an adult.

Long pants and non-slip, closed toe shoes are required. Cameras are allowed.

No backpacks or handbags are permitted for safety and security reasons.

The event may be cancelled at short notice due to adverse weather. If this happens, we will email attendees to advise of the cancellation or you can keep an eye on our Facebook page.

Our office is located at 15 Townsend St in Portland. There is ample on-street parking within this block. The bus will leave from the front of our office at the scheduled tour time so we recommend you arrive at least 10 minutes before departure.
