Our three business trainees, Jackson, Sophia, and Tom, share their experiences and offer advice to anyone considering a traineeship in 2027!
Jackson – All the different site visits I’ve been able to attend, especially in the Otways, has helped me understand how everything works. It’s great to get out of the office and see the treatment plants and pump stations. I’ve enjoyed seeing places I probably wouldn’t normally get a chance to visit.
Sophia – The amazing people I’ve gotten to work with! I’ve learned so much from them and there are so many different ways of doing things that I didn’t expect or know about before!
Tom – Just a few of my highlights have been creating an internal OH&S digital noticeboard, going on the Budj Bim tour and site visits to Heywood, Camperdown and Mortlake, and getting balloons and confetti at my desk on my birthday!
Jackson – I’ve learnt a lot of new skills, especially using Excel, GIS, and different systems. I’ve also improved my communication, time management, and confidence, which will help me in future jobs.
Sophia – Professionalism including how to write emails and communicate in meetings. Being a part of so many teams and learning from each department has been great, as I had no idea about many of them before I started.
Tom – Computer skills (especially Microsoft), communication skills including presenting in front of others. This experience has really improved my confidence, time management skills and ability to work in a team environment. I’ve also learnt a lot about different types of work and processes.

Jackson – Give it a go and don’t be afraid to ask questions. When I first started, I didn’t know anyone or any of the systems, but you learn a lot as you go.
Sophia – Just do it! If you’re thinking about taking a gap year for a traineeship or going straight to university, I’d recommend taking the gap year.
Tom – Be open to change and talk to people across the organisation to make new connections. Make sure you ask for help as there’s always someone you can talk to about any concerns you may have. Collaborate with the other trainees and help each other grow together!
Jackson – I’ve really enjoyed my time at Wannon Water so far. I’ve had the chance to work on different projects, visit lots of different sites, meet new people and learn lots of new skills.
Tom – I’d recommend this traineeship to anyone who needs some guidance when they don’t know exactly what they want to do yet. It helps you find out about yourself. I’ve loved working with my team, and the positive environment has helped me grow and find my best self at work. I’ll never forget my experience here when I continue through my career.
