Keeping your water clean

Behind the scenes at our water treatment plants

There’s a lot happening behind the scenes to make sure safe, clean drinking water reaches your tap. At many of our water treatment plants, multi-media filters play an important role in this process, helping to remove impurities from the water.

These filters contain layers of anthracite, sand and gravel that trap impurities and pathogens as water passes through them. To make sure they continue working effectively, we regularly inspect the filters and the condition of the filter media.

The inspections take careful planning. Filters need to be taken out of service and safely assessed while ensuring there is no impact on the community’s water supply.

Our treatment operators, supported by our treatment science team, work together to inspect filters across the region. This collaborative approach helps share knowledge and techniques while making inspections more efficient.

During an inspection, we check how well the filter is operating, including the condition and depth of the filter media, filter bed fluidisation and expansion, condition of the plenum (underneath of the filter), backwash performance and the condition of the filter structure and associated equipment.

The results help us identify any maintenance or repairs that may be needed and plan for the replacement of filter media when it reaches the end of its useful life.

Recently, the filter media in all three filters at the Port Campbell Water Treatment Plant was replaced, providing a great example of the detailed work that goes on to keep our water treatment plants performing at their best.

This is just one part of the water treatment process our teams manage every day to make sure we deliver safe, reliable drinking water across our region.
