We have replaced a rising sewer main in Portland as part of ongoing work to provide safe, reliable services to customers well into the future.
The 100-metre section of rising main was replaced near Madeira Packet Road. Construction took place over several weeks and a bypass pump was installed to ensure customers weren’t impacted during the project.
The sewer failed in 2023 and affected nearby properties. At the time, the asset was repaired and the impacted land was restored, with landowners compensated.
Wannon Water Branch Manager Asset Systems, Sarah van Rooy said “These replacement works help reduce the risk of future failures over the long term. We continue to work with the Environment Protection Authority regarding the 2023 asset failure.”
The sewer main is a crucial part of the Portland sewerage network.
“It’s a major pipe that carries nearly all of Portland’s sewage from local homes, businesses and industry to the sewage treatment plant,” said Ms van Rooy.
Across South West Victoria, we maintain more than 3,000 kilometres of water and sewerage mains.
Ms van Rooy said it was a timely reminder for customers to be mindful of what they flush down toilets or pour down sinks.
“It’s important these things are disposed of in a rubbish bin rather than down your drains,” Ms van Rooy said.
