We’re encouraging our customers to take a closer look at how much water they use each day and explore simple ways to save water at home.

From showers and washing clothes to watering gardens, everyday activities can use more water than many people realise. Understanding where water is used is an important step in reducing demand and protecting local water supplies for the future.

You can crunch the numbers at your house by using our Get Water Fit calculator – a quick and simple way to check where you may be able to save.

Why should you save water?

On average, Victorians use around 169 litres per person per day.

With a few small changes, households can help reduce this, easing pressure on water supplies and helping communities prepare for drier years ahead.

Using water efficiently helps reduce household costs while supporting long term water security and helping the environment.

Small actions, big impact

Simple changes can save thousands of litres each year, including:

  • Keeping your showers under four minutes.
  • Turning the taps off while brushing your teeth.
  • Only running full loads in your dishwasher and washing machine.
  • Fixing leaking taps and toilets quickly.

Every litre saved helps reduce pressure on our water sources and supports reliable water supplies into the future.

Remember the Permanent Water Saving Rules

Victoria has Permanent Water Saving Rules in place all day, every day. These common‑sense rules help us make the most of our drinking water by reducing waste and promoting efficient use.

Key rules include:

  • Always using a trigger nozzle on hoses.
  • Only using sprinklers or drip irrigation before 10am or after 6pm.
  • Not hosing driveways, paths or concrete, use a broom instead.

By following these rules, everyone can play a role in protecting Victoria’s water supplies for future generations.
