Warrnambool Sewage Treatment Plant – Revegetation Project

About the project

We’re working to return the area surrounding the Warrnambool Sewage Treatment Plant to a state that protects its environmental values and reflects the needs of user groups and the wider community.

This was important during the initial site clearing where we removed tonnes of contaminated material from the area in 2022. It included heavy metal from the adjoining rifle target facility which had been abandoned many years earlier.

The detail

We’ve engaged with land managers and community groups, including the Warrnambool Mountain Bike Club, on the revegetation process over a number of years. The landscape plan involves almost 50,000 plants from 30 different native plant species sourced through the Worn Gundidj Aboriginal Co-operative.

We’ve now started the first stage of revegetation with around 31,000 plants. We’re committed to reinstating mountain bike trails as part of the second stage proposed for 2027. This stage requires further approvals by the land manager in consultation with community groups

Once complete, the revegetation project will not only re-establish the surrounding environment but also help to screen the sewage treatment plant from the wider area.
